Description of a Textile Designer

Textile designers is the one who creates two-dimensional designs that are used sometimes as repeated designs when the production is doe of knit, printing or weaving fabrics of any produce of textile. These designers work either at industrial or non- industrial locations; most of them work in as a specialised context at the textile industry. Textile designing have two fields:

  • Fabrics (for fashion, clothing)
  • Interiors ( which include soft furnishing, upholstery and carpets )
These designers may also work in designing paper, greeting cards, packages, wrappers, and ceramics. Some designers work as a part of team of the designing team and most of them are self employed.

The textile designers work upon understanding, discussing and interpreting the needs, various requirements and ideas of the clients as accurate as possible. The consideration of the textile and the ways to use it is essential. The material’s performance, weight, flammability and strength should be noted and if every factor gives satisfactory results then that material should be used. After this textile selection the n they should design their ideas, various samples and sketches for their presentation which will be checked by the customer.

Liaising with clients should be done by the textile designer in order to interpret the ideas and desires of them. The perfect consideration of textiles and how it will be further used should be considered by them, the properties of materials used be researched accurately. Inspiring ideas should be undertaken. 

Textile designers experiment with various hues and texture for an innovative look. The designs which are used are often produced by CAD (Computer Aided Design). When the ideas are completed then they should be rechecked so that no fault would further be detected. The working should be done within the financial budget and according to the deadline. These designers should be in touch with the fluctuating fashion trends to be updated for the designing techniques. The official trade shows are very beneficial so these must be surely attended. Some of these designers use traditional techniques such as block printing, hand printing for the luxury markets to produce short textiles and embroidery.
